Target Species: Clear Lake & Northern California Rivers
Prime Fish, Peak Seasons, Proven Results
Clear Lake and the nearby Sacramento, Yuba, and Feather Rivers offer some of California’s finest freshwater fishing. From aggressive spring bass and schooling crappie to powerful sturgeon and seasonal striped bass and shad, every month has something biting. Early summer brings panfish action perfect for families, while winter invites serious anglers chasing trophy sturgeon in deep river channels.
Captain John Chargualaf tracks seasonal patterns, forage movement, and water conditions to keep you on the fish. Whether it’s a topwater bite at dawn or a precise anchor for deep river drifts, every trip is hands-on, personalized, and timed to your best chance at success. Our 20-foot boat is outfitted for comfort and limited to small groups, giving you plenty of room to learn, cast, and reel in the action.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to catch largemouth bass on Clear Lake?
Largemouth bass bite year-round, but March through May and October are prime. We target rocky points, submerged grass lines, and structure with jigs and soft plastics during pre- and post-spawn movement.
Are crappie available all year?
Yes. Crappie are catchable year-round, especially in spring (March–June). We fish tight to submerged brush and trees using small jigs or live minnows under floats.
What’s peak time for sturgeon fishing?
December through February on the Sacramento and Feather Rivers. We anchor on deep holes and use cured roe or lamprey to entice white sturgeon. These fish hit hard and fight harder—gear and guidance included.
When can we fish for shad and salmon?
Shad fishing peaks the last week of May through June. Chinook salmon typically run the Sacramento River June to mid-July and again in fall, with the Feather River offering similar windows. Timing can shift based on river conditions.
Can we fish trout anytime?
Yes—lightning trout in Collins Lake and lake trout at other nearby reservoirs are available year-round. We use light tackle for these colorful, aggressive fighters.
What’s the best time for striped bass?
Stripers run the Sacramento and Feather Rivers from April to May and again September to November. Expect powerful fights and solid table fare when regulations allow harvest.
Are bluegill and catfish good for family trips?
Absolutely. Bluegill bite best in June and July, but they’re available all year. Catfish are a year-round favorite at Clear Lake, with night fishing offering some of the best action.
What about kokanee salmon and other lake fish?
Kokanee salmon are targeted at Bullards Bar. Collins Lake also offers multi-species action, including lightning trout and panfish. These trips are great for variety and steady bites.
